| JOSEPH V. MELILLO, BAM EXECUTIVE PRODUCER | ||||
|
Rupert Goold's Macbeth is Shakespeare at his most thrilling, powerful, and brutal. Goold universalizes the play's terror by locating it in our recent cultural memory, invoking the tyranny and paranoia of Stalinist Russia and refusing his audience a comfortable remove from this tale of ruthless ambition. It is an interpretation that will grab you by the collar and keep you at the edge of your seat. The partnership of leading actor Patrick Stewart and director Rupert Goold signifies an auspicious artistic relationship. They previously collaborated on a much-lauded production of The Tempest that I saw during the Royal Shakespeare Company's Complete Works Festival, and once again they have carefully mined rich—and dark—truths from a well-known classic. Patrick Stewart's performance as Macbeth is chillingly nuanced, and this production—Goold's New York debut—will as secure his reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative directors of classical theater working today. I can't wait to see what he tackles next. I'll see you in the lobby, or you can reach me at joe@BAM.org. JOE |
