JOSEPH V. MELILLO, BAM EXECUTIVE PRODUCER
We consider it a momentous occasion to present the incomparably talented Nina Ananiashvili in her BAM debut as not only a prima ballerina, but also in her crucial role as the head of the legendary State Ballet of Georgia.

The State Ballet of Georgia is not a newly-formed company—it was one of the leading companies in the former Soviet Union. In 2004, after president Mikhail Sakashvili took office, he asked native daughter Nina Ananiashvili to return home to help him rebuild Georgian cultural and national pride. Upon Nina's return, she discovered the company in tatters as a result of the civil war that plagued Georgia following the dissolution of the USSR. There was no heat in the studio or theater, dancers rehearsed in layers of clothes (and even took class wearing coats), and there was no audience at first—amazingly they went on giving performances, essentially dancing for themselves.

In the past three years, Nina has returned the company to prominence by mounting works by international choreographers, including new dances by Alexei Ratmansky and Yuri Possokhov that will have their New York debuts at BAM. It is an honor and a privilege to host such a talented group of artists—I know you'll enjoy the show!

I'll see you in the lobby, or you can reach me at joe@BAM.org.
