Hugo
Weaving
Hugo Wallace Weaving was born on April 4, 1960
in Nigeria. Weaving spent much his early childhood traveling with
his family between Nigeria, Great Britain, and Australia due to
his father's work assignments in the computer industry. During
his teenage years weaving spent three years in England attending
Queen Elizabeth's Hospital School in Bristol. It was at the school
that he first acted in stage productions and also excelled academically.
In 1976 weaving moved to Australia and finished his education
at Knox Grammar School, Sydney and went on to graduate from NIDA
(National Institute of Dramatic Art) which boasts Mel Gibson and
Geoffrey Rush among their alumni. After graduation, Weaving went
on to success in the theater, film and television. Although popularly
known for his film work, Weaving feels most at home on stage and
continually performs in theater productions, most often with the
Sydney Theater Company. He has won numerous awards, including
two Australian Film Institute Awards (AFI) for Best Actor in a
Leading Role for his performances in
Proof (1991) and
The Interview (1998). He was awarded the Best Acting
prize for
The Interview at the Montreal Film Festival
in 1998 and that same year, won the Australian Star of the Year.
Roles in films such as
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen
of the Desert, The Matrix trilogy as Agent Smith and
The
Lord of the Rings trilogy as Lord Elrond have brought Weaving
considerable international attention. Weaving resides in Australia
with his wife, artist Katrina Greenwood and their two children,
Harry and Holly.
