New York-based artist Matthew Barney has been included in Documenta IX in Kassel, Germany, the 1993 and 1995 Whitney Biennial, and the 1993 and 2003 Venice Biennale. His one-person exhibition, The Cremaster Cycle, was organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and traveled to the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Musée dí’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. A retrospective of Barney’s series Drawing Restraint was organized by the 21st Century Museum for Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan, and traveled to Leeum Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Serpentine Gallery in London, and the Kunsthalle in Vienna. Barney has received numerous awards, including the Aperto prize at the 1993 Venice Biennale and the Hugo Boss Prize in 1996. He was the recipient of the 2007 Kaiser Ring Award and the Golden Gate Persistence of Vision Award at the 2010 San Francisco International Film Festival.
