Choreography by Mark Morris
Indisputably modern dance's most musical-and
wittiest-choreographer, Mark Morris invents lush, expressive
movement that feels at once exalted and profoundly corporeal. This
spring, his company returns to BAM with a mixed repertory of
premieres as well as a long-awaited revival.
The New York premiere of the humorous Looky,
choreographed to Kyle Gann's idiosyncratic score for Disklavier
(digitally driven player piano), simultaneously pays tribute to
classical and modern dance forms. In its world premiere,
Socrates, a drama in three parts set to music by Erik
Satie, features Morris' brilliant dancers with pianist Colin Fowler
and tenor Jean-Paul Fouchécourt. Not seen in New York since 1992,
the beautiful and fascinating Behemoth- the sole Morris
work performed in silence-reveals that Morris' genius can be
independent of his love of music.
