Based on Alkestis by Euripides translated by Anne Carson
Big Dance Theater
Directed and choreographed by Paul Lazar and Annie-B Parson
In a feverish blend of drama, music, dance, and live video, the Obie Award-winning Big Dance Theater presents a moving adaptation of Euripides' mysterious tragicomedy Alkestis (translated by Anne Carson). In the wake of his wife's decision to die in his stead, King Admentus finds that "to love the dead is endless tears." Big Dance uses a circular set to bring together mournful words, drunken demigods, and powerful dance in a quicksilver flow of action. Supernatural Wife revisits the power of tragedy while thoroughly subverting its theatrical and emotional conventions.
