Developed especially for the young film enthusiast,
Young Film Critics is a free nine-session after school program held
at BAM in which high school students will see classic and newly-released
films while they learn to write effective film criticism.
Guided by a master teacher and critic Nathan Lee (
The New York
Times, Film Comment), participating students will watch select
videos in class, attend screenings at BAM Rose Cinemas, engage
in lively discussion with students from schools throughout New
York City, and hone their critical writing skills.
In addition to the screening and discussions, students will meet
with special guests from the film industry. Former guests in BAM
critics programs have included David Denby of
The New Yorker magazine,
and Peter Sollett writer/director of
Raising Victor Vargas.
An anthology of student reviews is compiled at the end of the
course. Essays included in this anthology will make excellent
writing samples for students applying to colleges.
Classes are held at BAM on Mondays from 4—7pm, Oct
16—December 11.
Both the film screenings and the after-school sessions are at no
cost to the students.
The deadline to apply is October 10th 2006
