BAMdialogue with Wally Cardona
Dec 15, post-show
(free for ticket holders)

Contemplative at one juncture, raucous at the next, Wally Cardona’s dances transform the rhythms of modern life into entrancing, otherworldly movement. A former distinguished member of the Ralph Lemon Company, Cardona and the excellent dancers of the Wally Cardona Quartet deliver resonant, refined phrases that gather force and emotive thrust as they build, one on top of the other.

His troupe makes its BAM debut with Everywhere, set to a new sound score by Phil Kline, to be played on boomboxes placed throughout the theater, as well as performed live by the always-game Ethel string quartet. Cardona’s work is rooted in creating distinct physical spaces (in this instance, precariously balanced posts around which the dancers must navigate), often allowing audience members to experience a well-known setting in surprising new ways.

Everywhere establishes a palpable mood as it reveals the elements that intrigue Cardona—the unadulterated shapes, lines, and impulses that drive the dancing—never letting go of his fascination with the myriad ways each of us perceives the world.
