BAM and the Brooklyn Philharmonic take a look at music and literature that explore the complex nature of contemporary Jewish identity. Now in its fourth year, the Steinhardt Jewish Heritage Festival at BAM offers a series of Jewish-themed events in a
secular environment.

A dazzling array of rising young literary stars—Shalom Auslander,
Jennifer Gilmore, Aaron Hamburger, and Rachel Kadish—will join
moderator Alana Newhouse (Arts and Culture Editor, the Forward)
for a frank and fearless conversation about being Jewish, being a
writer, and the re-imagining of Jewish identities in early 21st century
American fiction.
The evening will begin with short readings and a
discussion with audience Q&A. A book-signing with hors d'oeuvres,
live music, and the chance to mingle with the authors will follow.
Complimentary wine will be served throughout the evening. |

The Hip-Hop Hafla Purim Party kicks off with a live megillah
reading (a traditional part of the Purim festivities) and features
up-and-coming artists who put an unconventional spin on
modern Jewish music. The lineup includes Kosha Dillz's crowdmoving
beats, Niz’s intelligent and uplifting lyrics, and the
hip-hop flavored reggae of Shem Disciples. The evening is curated
by dj handler. |

New York-based Asefa—meaning "collecting" in Hebrew—brings
together North African grooves, Sefardic sounds, and American jazz
in high-energy arrangements that incorporate improvisation and
unusual instrumentation. Founded in 2001 by bandleader and
composer Samuel Thomas, Asefa also features Shanir Blumenkranz
on oud and bass and Eric Platz on drums and percussion. |

Musical Director Michael Christie and the Brooklyn Philharmonic
present the New York premiere of the newly orchestrated Dreams & Prayers of Isaac the Blind by acclaimed Jewish-Argentinean
composer Osvaldo Golijov. Medieval soundscapes, mysticism, and
spiritual ecstasy abound in a concert also featuring Golijov's Last
Round and Mahler's Symphony No. 1 in D Major (Titan). Clarinetist
David Krakauer, one of the foremost musicians of new wave klezmer
music, is the featured guest artist for this exciting musical journey. |
