Finnish choreographer Tero Saarinen creates highly
original works that reflect aspects of ballet, butoh,
and Western contemporary dance. Add to this
intriguing mix of influences a keen understanding
of movement as a conduit for emotion and the
results are striking pieces like Borrowed Light,
a dance/choral work inspired by
Shaker culture, created in collaboration with Joel
Cohen and his early-music vocal ensemble, The
Boston Camerata.
Dressed in various shades of black and gray and
bathed in shifting streams of brilliant white light, the
eight dancers—four women and four men—move
with impressive fervor in tightly conscripted units,
torsos twisting and shuddering, feet stomping, arms
flinging overhead. Spiritual release—even ecstasy—emerges from
the occasional whirling group dance and from the stirring hymns that deliver
these earthbound souls to the heavens.
Production by the Tero Saarinen Company in collaboration with Octobre en Normandie (France), Kuopio Dance Festival
(Finland), Festival Civitanova Danza (Italy) and Le Volcan (France), Dansens Hus (Sweden), Teatri di Civitanova
(Italy), and Atelier 231 (France).
