In demand around the world for his richly imagistic choreography, Nacho Duato debuts at BAM with three signature dances performed by Spain's virtuosic Compañía Nacional de Danza. Each reveals a unique facet of Duato's command of movement and illustrates, through the use of a nuanced, technically brilliant dance vocabulary, why his work speaks to an increasingly international audience.
Performed to excerpts of Vivaldi choral works, Castrati is a spectacular dance, rife with furious ensemble movement and a harrowing finale in which eight men, dressed in black skirts and binding corsets, ambush a boy in white. Set to Spanish music from the Golden Age as well as poems of Garcilaso de la Vega, Por Vos Muero offers a modern take on the implicit, often furtive eroticism of court dance. The evening concludes with the US premiere of the severe and tender White Darkness, a dance that plumbs—with unreserved compassion—the depths of drug addiction.
