Pictures of birds, postcards, and charts. Bits of cork and china. Ephemera found and recast as art. Joseph Cornell created entire universes in small boxes, continuously searching for the moment when mundane objects became beautiful. Reclusive, painfully shy around women, and fiercely devoted to his homebound brother, Cornell’s circumscribed existence vividly comes to life in Charles L. Mee's ethereal Hotel Cassiopeia, the second of four plays (including bobrauschenbergamerica, 2003 Next Wave Festival) inspired by American artists and written for Anne Bogart's celebrated SITI Company.

For all his adult life, Cornell lived with his mother and brother in the same house in Queens, rarely leaving the city; we enter this insular world via an assemblage of words, movement, video, dance, and film. The play's characters, along with shards of memory, inhabit a hallucinatory landscape filled with maps of the heavens, miniscule trees, a ladder... and all the stuff of Cornell's wild imagination.

Hotel Cassiopeia was commissioned by Actors Theatre of Louisville for the Humana Festival of New American Plays and is presented in association with True Love Productions and SITI Company with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
