What is gained when something or someone is lost?
A multimedia work for electronic/acoustic violin, piano, electronics, and video, One Loss Plus portrays and confronts feelings of loss, isolation, and optimism through recorded interviews and narratives of those who have lost and gained from their experiences. Daniel Bernard Roumain's (DBR) meditative and melodious score reflects the re-telling of these personal stories as he traverses the stage and interacts with the video installation by Janet Wong, performing a continuous series of sonatas for solo violin, piano, and electronics.
A video installation of pre-recorded musicians and narrators forms a collage of natural and contrived conversations between people who have never met, interwoven with actual posts
from websites such as YouTube and MySpace. The result is a rich, intense amalgam of real and imaginary dialogues about our complex times and tangled lives.
One Loss Plus was commissioned by the
Next Wave Festival of the
Brooklyn Academy of Music and also made possible through the generous technical
support of the Shea Performing Arts Center at William Paterson University.
