Working in the same vein as his earlier Love Songs, Honoré crafts another musical in the Jacques Demy mold that closed the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Opening with a seductive French cover of “These Boots are Made for Walkin’,” Beloved bounces back and forth between the 60s and the 90s to follow the loves of Madeleine (played by Sagnier and Deneuve, respectively), an aging call girl, and her daughter Véra (Deneuve’s real-life fille Mastroianni). The all-star cast features an entertaining Milos Forman as Madeleine’s old Czech flame.
