Loosely based on a true story, this harrowing adaptation of one of le Carré’s most acclaimed novels follows a mild-mannered British diplomat (Fiennes) into the scorching heat of Nairobi to investigate the death of his activist wife (Weisz, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her breakthrough performance). At first stung by rumors that she was killed by a secret lover, he soon discovers that a multinational pharmaceutical company has been using locals as guinea pigs for their experimental drugs—and undergoes a political awakening in the process.
