Having recently returned to her native Italy after living abroad for 10 years, 13-year-old Marta is left to her own devices while attending preparatory classes for her confirmation. But she quickly sees through the hypocrisy of the priest, who cares more about status than about his congregation, and the doctrines of Roman Catholicism offer her little in terms of life lessons or consolation. Eventually, she forges her own way of the cross, which has much less to do with God than with her own climb towards adulthood. A New York Film Festival selection.
