Marie I and Marie II declare the entire world spoiled-so why
shouldn't they be? So sets the tone of this freewheeling landmark
of the Czech New Wave, wherein our heroines gallivant about like a
couple of avant-garde Marx sisters, perpetually gorging themselves
on food and drink, wreaking havoc at a 1920s-style nightclub, and
instigating a food fight of (literally) apocalyptic proportions
(Slant Magazine likened it to "Monty Python's Mr. Creosote skit as
directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini"). An endlessly inventive, formally
radical ode to rebellion-nearly every scene is interrupted by
quick-cut montages or sudden changes in film stock and
color-Daisies was banned by the Czech government for its subversive
feminist message and (really!) radical depiction of food
wastage.
