What if 2001’s HAL had been a horny little piece of artificial intelligence? Based on the Dean Koontz best-selling novel, Demon Seed pits the ever-stunning Julie Christie against her scientist husband’s creation, a super-computer named Proteus IV who has only one thing on its mind. Donald Cammell (co-director with Nicolas Roeg on Performance) took a rare seat in the director’s chair for this seemingly straightforward genre outing, which it was dismissed as at the time. These days, however, it is regarded as a defining example of 1970s horror.
