Scripted from Christopher Marlowe’s 1593 play, Edward II is a deliriously anachronistic, stylized portrait of the rise and fall of the titular king by UK cinema’s punk queer enfant terrible. Jarman amplifies the play’s gay subtext, contriving a brutal tale of contemporary homophobia and gay activism as Edward’s reckless and feckless devotion to his lover Gaveston enrages Queen Isabella (a chilly Swinton in increasingly flamboyant Hermès gowns) and drives her to conspiracy. Features a stirring performance of Cole Porter’s “Every Time We Say Goodbye” by Annie Lennox.
