In a filmography celebrated for its epic bloodbaths and
assaultive style, Miike's first foray into 3-D is a triumph of
restraint. Adapting Masaki Kobayashi's classic tale of an
unemployed samurai seeking to reestablish his honor through
seppuku, the action-film master trades in his predecessor's fury
for melancholy, framing elaborately choreographed fight sequences
with a contemplative melodrama of Shakespearean dimensions.
Unraveling the labyrinthine plot at an elegant pace, this remake
also boasts some of the most gorgeous images of Miike's
career.
