Grant and Russell fire one-liners with Gatling-gun rapidity in this classic screwball comedy. Reporter Russell waltzes into her editor’s (Grant) office with breaking news: she’s getting married and leaving the job. Not wanting to lose his best employee (and ex-wife) to an insurance salesman, he sends her running after a story while he orchestrates an outrageous plan to prevent her wedding from happening. From the get-go, the dialogue comes fast and furious, revealing Hawks’ trademark mix of humor and cynicism, as the smart-talking leads go head to head in a dizzying battle of wits.
