Directed by Bille August | 1987

With Max Von Sydow, Pelle Hvenegaard, Erik Paaske

This screening is co-presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Pelle (Hvenegaard) and his father (von Sydow) emigrate from 19th-century Sweden to Denmark, dreaming of a better life but confronted instead with bitter discrimination and hardship. Von Sydow delivers an “immensely moving, tender depiction of a man cowed by age and servitude” (Time Out London) in this stirring epic based on Martin Andersen Nexø’s four-part novel. Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

In Swedish, Scanian, and Danish with English subtitles
