Kelly de-glammed and dressed down for her role as the anguished,
co-dependent wife of a washed-up alcoholic actor (Crosby) in this
adaptation of a Clifford Odets play. Her emotionally charged
performance struck Oscar pay dirt, beating out Judy Garland's turn
in A Star is Born-one of the Academy's most famous upsets ("the
biggest robbery since Brinks," according to Groucho Marx).
