A Kafkaesque take on the David Lean-style widescreen epic, this adaptation of Dino Buzzati’s classic novel “may be the grandest and most lavish existentialist parable ever made” (The Village Voice). An aristocratic officer guards an old fortress from a rumored attack by forces up north, but the enemy never appears, resulting in an eerie mix of paranoia and ennui. Shot entirely on location in southeast Iran, the film features an Ennio Morricone score and, in addition to von Sydow, a staggering cast of European stars.
