Troell’s lyrical epic recounts the 19th-century immigrant experience via the story of a Swedish farm couple (von Sydow and Ullman) who leave behind their hardscrabble existence in Europe seeking a better life in Minnesota. Unsentimental and graced with poetic imagery, this “infinitely absorbing and moving” (Roger Ebert) drama received Academy Award nominations for both Best Picture and Best Foreign Language Film.
