The one and only film directed by Indian dance pioneer Uday Shankar (brother of the late Ravi) is an autobiographical portrait of a dancer who dreams of establishing his own academy. Starring Shankar and his wife Amala (a legendary performer in her own right), Kalpana stands not only as one of the creative peaks in the history of independent Indian filmmaking, but also a rare authentic dance film—in which the art form becomes the primary physical vocabulary of the characters.
