Director Poitier simply winds up his hyperventilating stars and lets them bounce off—and over—the walls in this smash hit about a failed actor-playwright duo (Pryor and Wilder) who quit the stifling Big Apple for better opportunities out west, but instead end up with 125-year prison sentences for a crime they didn’t commit. This cuckoo, featherheaded comedy culminates in a loony escape plan at the prison’s annual rodeo.
