Hitchcock’s directorial debut opens strikingly with a torrent of leggy chorines skittering down a spiral staircase. The delirious melodrama that ensues charts the romantic ups and downs of supposedly sophisticated showgirl Patsy (the first of Hitch’s many “menaced brides,” who ends up on a tropical island married to a psychopath) and her provincial friend Jill (who ends up sleeping with half of London). This restoration restores 20 minutes of footage not seen since 1926.
