Directed by Douglas Sirk | 1957

With Rock Hudson, Robert Stack, Dorothy Malone

Sirk makes remarkable expressionist use of a widescreen frame and bleak black-and-white cinematography in this adaptation of a Faulkner story that Sirk called his personal favorite. Following a troupe of stunt fliers leading shiftless, sordid lives in Depression-era New Orleans, The Tarnished Angels stars Hudson—described by Dave Kehr as “astonishingly good”—as a journalist fascinated by their doomy existence. Highlighted by a freaky Mardi Gras celebration that’s all canted angles, weird shadows, and grotesque masks.
