Fonda is cast against type as a cold-blooded henchman hired to shoot anyone obstructing a railway project. He meets his match in Jill McBain (Cardinale), who seeks revenge on her husband’s murder by hiring two gunslingers. Leone burnished his widescreen skills with searing, undistorted close-ups in this film scripted by Leone with Bernardo Bertolucci and Dario Argento. Morricone’s iconic score— “a mix of hauntingly spacious pieces and reconfigured snatches of old-timey tunes” (AllMusic), interspersed with the sounds of nature, passing trains, and shotguns—has been sampled in everything from Joe Dante’s The 'Burbs to a Bruce Springsteen song.
Ennio Morricone will no longer be appearing in person at the 5:30pm screening as originally scheduled. Tickets for the 5:30pm screening, now on sale at regular BAM Rose Cinemas prices, can only be purchased at the box office.
