Directed by Sergio Leone | 1968

With Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Charles Bronson

“A masterpiece, a film that expands Leone’s baroque, cartoonish style into genuine grandeur, weaving dozens of thematic variations and narrative arabesques around a classical western foundation myth.”
—Dave Kehr, The Chicago Reader

Fonda is cast against type as a cold-blooded henchman hired to shoot anyone obstructing a railway project. He meets his match in Jill McBain (Cardinale), who seeks revenge on her husband’s murder by hiring two gunslingers. Leone burnished his widescreen skills with searing, undistorted close-ups in this film scripted by Leone with Bernardo Bertolucci and Dario Argento. Morricone’s iconic score— “a mix of hauntingly spacious pieces and reconfigured snatches of old-timey tunes” (AllMusic), interspersed with the sounds of nature, passing trains, and shotguns—has been sampled in everything from Joe Dante’s The 'Burbs to a Bruce Springsteen song.
