Directed by Alfred Hitchcock | 1940

Dashing widower Maxim de Winter (Olivier) brings his young bride (Fontaine) home to his country estate, Manderley. But the nameless waif is haunted at every turn by the memory of her dead predecessor, the titular Rebecca. Goaded by Manderley’s housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (an eerie performance by Judith Anderson), the young bride plunges deep into a sensual world of lies and intrigue in her attempt to unravel the mystery of Rebecca. This romantic thriller—adapted from Daphne du Maurier’s gothic novel—was Hitchcock’s first American film.
