Directed by Roberto Rossellini | 1950

With Ingrid Bergman, Mario Vitale, Renzo Cesana, Mario Sponzo

“Masterwork… Rossellini's technique is thoroughly modern: it could have been made last week, or next year, by Jean-Luc Godard.”
—Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader

Desperate to escape an internment camp, a Lithuanian refugee (Bergman) marries an Italian fisherman (Vitale) who whisks her away to his remote Sicilian island. But the harsh, unforgiving culture that confronts her leaves her spiritually isolated. Rossellini and Bergman’s landmark collaboration is a miracle of neo-realism, dominated by the rugged landscape of the island and its ever-present volcano—the site of one of cinema’s most transcendent climaxes.
