Directed by Charles Chaplin | 1921

With Charles Chaplin, Edna Purviance, Jackie Coogan

“While it will move people to uproarious laughter and keep them in a state of uneasing delight, it also will touch their hearts and win sympathy.”
—Variety

Chaplin’s debut feature (he also wrote, directed, produced, and composed music for the film) declares itself from the first title card a “picture with a smile—and, perhaps, a tear.” Abandoned by his hapless mother (Purviance), a young child (Coogan) winds up in the care of the clownish Tramp (Chaplin), who grows to love the boy and fights to protect him amid countless comic pitfalls and some truly tender moments.
