series Jordan Peele: The Art of the Social Thriller
Directed by Wes Craven
With Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich, Matthew Lillard, Drew Barrymore
Wes Craven ingeniously deconstructs the genre conventions he helped define in this self-reflexive slasher satire in which a knife-wielding Ghostface killer terrorizes small town California teens, whose knowledge of horror movie clichés can’t save them. The film that rescued the horror movie from direct-to-video purgatory in the 1990s, Scream both slyly subverts the form while delivering the gory goods. WNYC’s Sean Rameswaram describes Scream as “one of the most influential pieces of filmmaking in horror history. We take a second (or third, or fourth) look at the film that dared to reinvigorate the genre by mocking many of its most trusted tropes.”
