Mike Leigh’s triumphantly humanist ensemble drama unfolds over the course of four seasons in the life of a happily married, 60-something suburban couple and the variously broken and troubled cast of friends and family who drift in and out of their orbit. As the perpetually single, tragically insecure secretary who eases her loneliness with wine, the great Lesley Manville is the film’s emotional core, her performance an exquisitely shaded tour-de-force of quiet heartbreak.
