Folk, Form, and Fire: The Prokofiev Piano Concertos
Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg
Conducted by Valery Gergiev
Conductor Valery Gergiev, the Mariinsky Orchestra, and five renowned soloists perform Sergei Prokofiev's piano concertos in this marriage of virtuosic repertoire and pianistic might—part of year two of the Mariinsky’s residency at BAM.
Written between 1912 and 1932, Prokofiev’s concertos are seismographs of the volatile 20th century: the folk melodies of No.1 and No.2; the warhorse effervescence of No.3; the rarely performed concerto for the left hand, written for World War I veteran Paul Wittgenstein; and the elusive No.5, composed in the shadow of Stalin. Daniil Trifonov, George Li, Alexander Toradze, Sergei Redkin, and Sergei Babayan are the formidable soloists in this comprehensive showcase of composer and genre.
Piano Concerto No. 1: George Li
Piano Concerto No. 2: Alexander Toradze
Piano Concerto No. 3: Daniil Trifonov
Piano Concerto No. 4: Sergei Redkin
Piano Concerto No. 5: Sergei Babayan
