Acknowledgement of ancestors is an integral component of
DanceAfrica. The festival begins at the historic Weeksville
Heritage Center in Brooklyn with music, dance, and the Council of
Elders performing libation ceremonies to honor those who have
passed on to the ancestral grounds.
Weeksville Heritage Center is a historic site of great national
significance. During the 19th century, the village of Weeksville
was a vibrant and independent African American community. The
contemporary center includes three historic houses and a new
Education and Cultural Arts Building. Visit weeksvillesociety.org for more information.
