This class gives dancers the rare opportunity to learn merina, a Malagasy style of dance and music, from DanceAfrica Artistic Director Baba Chuck Davis and dancers from this year’s visiting company Bakomanga.
Merina is distinctive for women and men. The female dances are soft and harmonious, with hand movements called latsitanana and shoulder movements called dihisoroka and sao dia mipika, while the male dances express strength, using leg movements that imitate the gestures of a traditional sport called diamanga.
For intermediate to advanced dancers. Space is limited. Pre-registration is recommended.
