Festival
d’Aix-en-Provence
Our trip begins in scenic Aix-en-Provence, home to world-famous
outdoor markets, breathtaking Mediterranean vistas, and one of the
most exciting opera festivals running today. The Festival d’Aix has
showcased some of BAM’s most beloved artists, including Peter
Brook, Pina Bausch, and Trisha Brown. You’ll be immersed in the
wrenching drama of Strauss’s Elektra, a new coproduction
from Teatro alla Scala and the Metropolitan Opera. Then you’ll
experience the grandeur of Don Giovanni presented in a
medieval palace courtyard, the Festival d’Aix’s mainstage theater
since 1948.
Festival d’Avignon
Next it’s on to the Festival d’Avignon—France’s Next Wave—which
every July transforms the majestic city of nursery-song fame into a
laboratory for artistic innovation. You’ll dive right into this
open-air forum, critiquing contemporary performance amidst some of
the finest gothic architecture in Europe. Joe Mello, BAM’s
Executive Producer will select two standout performances for you to
enjoy from the festival’s 40 or more productions—a perennially
exciting roster which last year included an adaptation of
Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita, directed by Simon
McBurney (full festival programming announced March
18).
