“New York’s urban landscape becomes a veritable stage for expressing the dynamic mettle of youthful frustration, lust, escape, and freedom” —Interview Magazine
“Acting out rage and delight through Robbins’ carefully cultivated steps, the cast demonstrated the pent-up emotions of a new generation” —The New York Times
“this film is just about the purest, sexiest thing going in ballet.” –New York Magazine
Shot on location in NYC with an ensemble cast of New York City Ballet dancers, NY Export: Opus Jazz brings Jerome Robbins’ choreography back to the streets of New York for the first time since the film of West Side Story with this critically acclaimed reimagining of Robbins’ 1958 “ballet in sneakers.”
Utilizing sites such as the pre-renovation High Line, McCarren Park Pool, Coney Island, Red Hook, and Carroll Gardens NY Export: Opus Jazz tells the story of a disaffected urban youth through movement that blends ballet, jazz, and ballroom dancing with Latin, African, and American rhythms to create a powerfully expressive, sexy, and contemporary style.
