Ever since he threw an old lady down the stairs while playing a vicious gangster in 1947's Kiss of Death, Richard Widmark (1914-2008) was Hollywood's go-to actor for all manner of villains and anti-heroes. Although he described himself as "gentle" in real life, he was so convincing and brought such depth to his criminal characters that people on the street often expected him to be just like the characters he portrayed.
