SERIES DESCRIPTION

Barbet Schroeder has worked internationally in all aspects of cinema—first as a critic for Cahiers du cinéma, then producing and acting in key works of the French New Wave before turning to directing himself. As a director, he has moved fluidly between independent films in France and mainstream projects in Hollywood, as well as between documentary and fiction, often incorporating realistic elements into his narrative work (such as real johns participating in S&M sequences in Maîtresse), or vice-versa (such as his grafting of a thriller-like structure onto his documentary Terror’s Advocate). No matter what form, his cinema is consistently daring in its treatment of controversial fictional and real-life characters, and provocative in its exploration of the dark, sordid side of any subject, from sexuality and human relationships to politics and history.
