Treasures from a Chest

Fri, Oct 31 at 7pm*
*Live piano and commentary by Serge Bromberg

Approx. 90min

The always entertaining film preservationist/silent film accompanist Serge Bromberg returns with Treasures from a Chest, curated for BAM—no two screenings are alike! The films come from a treasure trove of found silent films; past programs have included shorts from Méliès, the Lumière brothers, Keaton, and Chaplin. This event always sells out, so make sure to buy your tickets in advance. Special thanks to the French Institute Alliance Francaise (FIAF), the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, and Lobster Films.

This year’s program celebrates the 100th anniversary of animation. Some of the program’s highlights include:

Fantasmagorie (France, 1908)
This animation by French caricature artist Émile Cohl is considered the first animated film in the history of cinema

Heart of an Indian Maid (US, 1911)
Starring Pearl White.
This color western was discovered in an auction 120 miles outside of London.

Halloween (US, 1931)
An animation by Dick Huemer, this lost episode from the series “Toby the Pup” was found in France.

Films Mulsant
This amazing treasure found in an Amsterdam antique store.

The Cuckoo Murder Case (US, 1930)
An animation by Ub Iwerks, this is a wild Halloween film by the creator of Mickey Mouse.

Fatty and Mabel Adrift (US, 1916)
Starring Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle
The definitive restoration of this burlesque masterpiece is a homage to Harold “Rusty” Casselton, an internationally known and respected restorer of rare and silent films.

Plus many surprises!
