FIRST THINGS FIRST

What does BAM stand for?

BAM is an acronym for Brooklyn Academy of Music. In 1861, when BAM was founded, the term "academy" had a slightly different connotation than it does today; it referred to an association or institution for the advancement of art, literature, or science, which BAM certainly endeavored to be. In the 21st Century, however, "academy" usually implies a school, and although BAM may educate and edify, it does not offer traditional classes to students of art.

What are the Box Office hours?

For in person sales, the Box office is open Mon-Sat from 12noon-6pm. While the box office stays open until curtain on a performance day, advance sales end one hour prior to the show. The box office closes after the last performance in June and reopens the day after Labor Day. Phone sales hours are different: Mon-Fri, 10am to 6pm, Sat, 12noon-6pm and performance Sundays from 12noon-4pm. Summer hours vary. The BAM sales offices are closed most major holidays.

Single ticket buyers may also exchange their tickets for a different date of the same production for a $15 per ticket fee ($8 for Friends of BAM; no fee for Patrons).

Like many theaters, both the BAM Harvey Theater and Howard Gilman Opera House have seats that have a limited view of the stage for certain types of events. A BAM Ticket Services or Box Office representative will explain the nature of the partial view seat prior to selling it. Most BAM partial view seats are sold at a discount.
