Mendes’ (American Beauty) latest is based on the Richard Yates’ novel revealing dead-end domestic conformity in 1950s suburban Connecticut. Once passionate, full of aspirations, and critical of those who’ve succumbed to the nuclear family ideal, Frank and April Wheeler (DiCaprio and Winslet) find themselves befalling a similar fate.
