DanceAfrica Visual Art: Nandipha Mntambo
The Diker Gallery Café will be open for viewing 2:30—6pm every Thursday from May 24—Jun 24 and 1 hour prior to all DanceAfrica performances.
BAM Visual Art is pleased to present a survey of recent video work by South African artist Nandipha Mntambo. Viewed together, the featured pieces—Ukungenisa (2009), Paso Doble (2011), and The Island (2015)—underscore the artist’s interest in the relationship between life and death, power and fragility.
Nandipha Mntambo works across sculpture, painting, photography, and video and is perhaps best known for her evocative, large-scale cowhide works and other uses of organic materials. She holds an MFA from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town and has exhibited internationally. She was shortlisted for the AIMIA | AGO Photography Prize in Canada in 2014 and was a Civitella Ranieri Fellow in 2013.
