Dance & Music Workshops with Chartwell Dutiro

Internationally acclaimed master of the mbira Chartwell Dutiro comes to Brooklyn this DanceAfrica season to offer a rare series of music and dance workshops. Drawing on his vast experience as a workshop leader and lecturer at universities and colleges across Europe, Dutiro will begin each class with a performance of Zimbabwean mbira music and/or dance, followed by an interactive lesson in these performance traditions. Musicians and dancers of all levels welcome.

About Chartwell Dutiro
Chartwell Dutiro is an experienced teacher and workshop leader who inspires all ages. A frequent lecturer in African shamanism and culture at London’s renowned School of Oriental and African Studies—where he held the coveted position of Arts and Humanities Research Board Resident performer-researcher in 2003—Dutiro regularly teaches mbira, dance, percussion, and singing in community and school settings across Europe and the US. He lectures and gives demonstrations all over the world, and encourages children to learn geography, history, and wider cultural studies through music and dance.
