Seminar: WE JUST DON’T KNOW
- 11AM
Mark Morris Dance Center
Co-presented by BAM and Mark Morris Dance Group
With Kate McIntosh
In conjunction with In Many Hands
Artist Kate McIntosh offers a playful, provocative seminar on scientific thinking and the use of imagination in the arts. Beginning with a performance lecture, the class comprises an investigative experiment-game for participants, who are invited to reexamine our understanding of reality—to see how the way that we name things and use metaphor is key to our perception of the world.
McIntosh engages individuals’ natural curiosity in positing several questions: How can artistic thought processes be disturbing and useful for our factual, inventive, and scientific ideas? What is a healthy suspicion of the poverty of metaphors? What happens when we attempt to show what we know?

With no stage and no performers, this hands-on communal experience is an intimate shared adventure through the particularities and nuances of our tactile sense.
