BAM 50 State Initiative Art Project
- 1PM
The Plaza at 300 Ashland
Rain location: BAM Fisher Lower Lobby
Led by Katherine Toukhy
In partnership with For Freedoms 50 State Initiative
BAM invites you to participate in a new all-inclusive, collaborative civic art project in partnership with For Freedoms. Led by Brooklyn artist Katherine Toukhy, this interactive event is activated by you and other members of the community, offering a unique sphere where creating and sharing social and political statements is an integral component of the final work. Images of select works of art created at the event will be featured on BAM’s outdoor digital sign in the weeks leading up to Election Day.
For Freedoms, which was founded in 2016 by artists Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman, produces exhibitions, town hall meetings, and public art as a means for artists to spur greater participation in civic life.
Leadership support for BAM Visual Art provided by Agnes Gund and Toby Devan Lewis
Brooklyn-based visual artist Katherine Toukhy makes figurative cutouts, installations, paintings, and social sculptures that explore cyclical violence and transformation informed by her position as a US-born Egyptian woman of the Coptic diaspora. She has presented her work at the Arab American National Museum and the Charles Wright Museum of African American History in Michigan, among others; has had residencies at BRIC and The Project for Empty Space; and was a Pollack-Krasner fellow at Vermont Studio Center.
