Sasha Waltz & Guests
Directed and choreographed by Sasha Waltz

"Waltz is blessed with a brilliant theatrical imagination”
—New York Magazine

German choreographer Sasha Waltz (Impromptus, 2005 Next Wave; Körper, 2002 Next Wave) returns to BAM with a work that calls on the deepest emotional and physical reserves of her dancers. Gezeiten (Tides), an unsparing dance about the helplessness of humans in the face of disaster, opens after a cataclysmic event has taken place, and all that is left is the temporary refuge of a room.

An apocalyptic undercurrent keeps the dance on edge as tender exchanges are rendered futile against impending doom. Smoke billows from the floor. The outside world seeps in. And the dancers' movements, frantically trying to stay on balance, grow ever more intense. Heart-stopping, challenging, and at times hard to watch, Gezeiten asks, when all is about to be lost, what keeps hope alive?

Music by Jonathan Bepler and Johann Sebastian Bach
Stage design by Thomas Schenk and Sasha Waltz
